SPE-1000 | SPE-1000 Inspection Services | Why would I need SPE-1000?

CSA SPE-1000 is a Code developed by the Canadian Advisory Council on Electrical Safety to facilitate one-time approvals for general electrical products installed in Canada, in cases where standard certification is impractical or unavailable.

SPE-1000 is referred to as a Model Code for electrical equipment that qualifies to undergo a field evaluation rather than the typical certification process for the Canadian market. A field evaluation is an efficient way to get an applicable product assessed and labeled, and therefore requires approval from a field evaluation inspector. Products that are in accordance with SPE-1000 Inspection and pass a field evaluation are then recognized as acceptable by Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).

Which Products Qualify for SPE-1000?

 SPE-1000 Inspection is applicable in Canada for products of the following nature: 

●     Custom-built equipment for special applications

●     Equipment manufactured on a non-repetitive basis

●     Equipment sold in quantities of not more than 500 on a national basis, per model, per year, per inspection body

●     Equipment not obtainable as “certified” under a regular certification program

●     Equipment already installed or ready for use on-site and awaiting acceptance by the AHJ

●     Complete systems or subassemblies that are all available for examination and testing during the evaluation process

●     Other electrical equipment as determined by the AHJ.

SPE-1000 is primarily based on Canadian Electrical Code (CEC) and addresses the minimum requirements for equipment as they pertain to electrical safety. The Model code may also call for other CSA standards based on Electrical product/equipment to be inspected.

SPE-1000 inspections can be performed anywhere in the world, but it can only be recognized on products/equipment that will be installed in Canada.
